About Rogue Planet

Rogue Planet was formed by Nicholas Mau and Sandra Conley in 2007 and now orbits in the historic School of Mine in Clunes, Victoria. Nicholas works with Blak Dot Gallery in Brunswick, Victoria, reinterpreting the work of Trevor Turbo Brown for screenprinted limited edition works on paper. His own work is held in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and State Library of Victoria (to name a few) and was included in the exhibitions Don't be too Polite: Posters and Activism (2017) at the Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne and Got the Message? – 50 years of political posters (2013) at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Rogue Planet credits some of its influences to social and community arts collectives like RedPlanet, RedLetter and Another Planet, all previously located within the inner city of Melbourne from 1980 to 1992. Rogue Planet screenprint studio, art gallery and school, has evolved into a vibrant combination of social and commercial based art works and activities within a multi-purpose creative space. The Clunes School of Mines location is set in a serene environment, surrounded by nature, a sense of timelessness and a couple of cafes nearby. It is the perfect backdrop for a variety of creative pursuits and special events.

An artist is working on a large canvas with a red background, depicting a figure in black and white. The artist is wearing a beige shirt and a red beanie, leaning over the artwork in a studio setting.
A woman with long gray hair wearing glasses, a green sweater, and a beaded necklace, smiling at the camera indoors.

Rogue Planet has a social conscience and will question the wisdom of carbon-offset trading or champion the plight of animals facing environmental degradation. It also creates prints like ‘Fluffy’ the killer kitten, for the sake of humour and the need to be meaningless.

Nicholas has permanent works in the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), National Gallery of Australia in Canberra (NGA), Ballarat Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Western Australia, State Library of Victoria (SLV), Estonian State Library and Chaumont Poster Museum in France.
