Observed and Imagined: recent works by Deborah Brearley

19 March–6 April 2026

Deborah Brearley is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist, author, gardener and creative mentor whose work is rooted in a life lived close to nature. Based in rural Tasmania, she forages prunings and reclaims discarded timber to carve angels, sprites and wistful female forms, while her paintings capture the bucolic quiet of the landscape and the quiet pleasure of living simply. Women, birds and nests recur throughout her practice; grounded yet dreaming, tender yet timeless, figures going about the unhurried business of making homes and places of beauty. For Brearley, making is oxygen: a constant that moves freely between needlecraft and textiles, painting and carving, garden and studio. Her work carries the still, gentle whimsy of a life shaped by creative process and an abiding belief that the spark to make is alive in all of us.
